Red Eye

What it is: Red eye occurs when the white surface of the eye appears bloodshot or pink due to swollen or irritated blood vessels. It is usually mild and often improves on its own, though it can occasionally indicate a more significant problem.

Common causes: Common triggers include surface infections such as conjunctivitis, dry eyes, inflamed eyelids, or a harmless burst blood vessel on the eye.

Self-care:

  • Avoid rubbing or touching your eye to prevent worsening irritation.
  • Do not wear contact lenses until your eye has fully recovered.
  • Speak to a local pharmacist for advice on soothing eyedrops or eye-cleaning solutions.

When to seek help: Visit a health post, PHC, or hospital if the redness lasts several days, produces sticky discharge, or affects a young child. Seek immediate emergency medical care or call 102 if you experience severe eye pain, sudden vision changes, light sensitivity, unequal pupil sizes, or an eye injury.

If symptoms suggest a serious emergency, call 102 for an ambulance where available.
