Constipation

What it is: Constipation is a common condition where bowel movements become infrequent, difficult to pass, or feel incomplete. It often leaves stool feeling unusually dry, hard, or lumpy.

Common causes: Triggers include a diet low in fibre, insufficient fluid intake, lack of physical movement, ignoring the urge to pass stool, changes in daily routine, stress, or medication side effects.

Self-care:

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fibre, such as fruits and whole grains, while drinking plenty of safe water.
  • Maintain an unhurried daily toilet routine and try resting your feet on a low stool to raise your knees above your hips.
  • Engage in regular light activity, such as daily walking, to help stimulate bowel movements.

When to seek help: Visit a local health post, PHC, or hospital if constipation is persistent, recurs regularly, or is accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, severe abdominal pain, or high fever. Seek immediate hospital care or call 102 for sudden, severe abdominal distress.

If symptoms suggest a serious emergency, call 102 for an ambulance where available.
